Champion of Environmental Health Research Award
We are pleased to announce that Dr Kurt Straif, Head of the Section of IARC Monographs, is one of 12 recipients of the first-ever Champion of Environmental Health Research Award. The awards are presented by the United States National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) to recognize outstanding researchers, leaders, and communicators who have contributed to the NIEHS mission of discovering how the environment affects people in order to promote healthier lives. The awards were presented on 1 November at the NIEHS campus, to celebrate the institute's 50th anniversary. Read more.

Letter from IARC Director to Dr Collins, Director NIH
The IARC Director, Dr Christopher Wild, has sent a letter to Dr Francis Collins, Director, National Institutes of Health, on the subject of the IARC Monographs, providing a number of clarifications and corrections following a letter to NIH from Mr Jason Chaffetz, Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, House of Representatives, Congress of the United States.

Volume 114: Red Meat and Processed Meat
Following random reports today Friday 23 October in the British press postulating on the outcome of the IARC evaluation on the carcinogenicity of red meat and processed meat, please note that there was NO breach of embargo, as no embargoed material was shared with any news outlet, in Britain or elsewhere.

IARC/WHO will issue a news release with the detailed outcome of the evaluation on Monday 26, at noon, Paris time, to coincide with a news report in The Lancet Oncology.

As part of ongoing efforts to enhance transparency and public understanding of the IARC Monographs, the "Instructions for Authors" that are provided to members of Monograph Working Groups have now been published online. These instructions should be read in conjunction with the Preamble to the IARC Monographs, which provides guidelines for the selection, evaluation, and integration of data for the Monographs.

IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention
The IARC Monographs Programme is pleased to announce the launch of the IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention website. The IARC Handbooks of Cancer Prevention provide evaluations of various approaches to primary and secondary cancer prevention. Previous volumes have evaluated the cancer-preventive activity of chemopreventive agents, the effectiveness of screening, and the effectiveness of tobacco control. The new website provides a comprehensive overview of the IARC Handbooks series, with free access to PDFs of published volumes and lists of evaluations for all agents and activities evaluated so far, as well as updated Working Procedures and Guidelines for Observers for future volumes, and information about upcoming meetings.

Volume 100: A Review of Human Carcinogens
We are pleased to announce that Volume 100 of the IARC Monographs was shortlisted for the 2013 British Medical Association (BMA) Medical Book Awards held on 17 September, being "Highly Commended" in the Public Health category (see our certificate). The judging panel commented: “This is an important resource in that it defines the current state of evidence-based thinking on cancer-causing agents. JNCI article - Preventable Exposures Associated With Human Cancers
The IARC Monographs has published, in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, an overview of established human carcinogens, along with target organ sites. This will allow searches either by exposure or by organ site, a valuable tool for epidemiologists, public health scientists and decision-makers.
